Handmade Valenciennes bobbin lace circa 1860

This fragile collar of Valenciennes bobin lace was owned by Mary when she traveled in a covered wagon from Indiana to San Francisco in 1856 with her mother, Sarah Johnston Barnes who created the collar, and her father Colonel Alexander West Barnes. A paisley pattern is repeated in the mesh along the middle band.
