Whitework is a general term for embroidery on a solid colored base fabric using the same color thread to make the pattern. Typically a woven fabric in white or ecru, other colors are also used. A wide range of lace and embroidery designs can be called whitework. The list includes many of the historical styles from the 12th - 14th century, drawn-thread work, pulled thread, and Hardanger embroidery (Norway).
